Homework (Click here
to see homework calendar.)
Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday nights. Fifth grade students should be involved in homework/academic activities for approximately 50 minutes per night. The students write the daily assignments in the planner. On Fridays when homemwork is assigned, it will be a Study Link as a follow through from the day's math assignment.
This
week's POW! can be found by viewing the homework calendar.
Each week during
the school year you will be asked to find information regarding a
specific place in the world and write a one paragraph summary of your
findings. You may use any type of reference you have available:
an encyclopedia, the internet, an atlas, travel books, a person
who has been there, or any other resource you can find.
Schedule
Monday: Read at least two sources about the location. Choose a topic about your location and find 6 -8 facts to support the topic sentence. The facts are in note form, no complete sentences.
Tuesday: Select 3 - 5 notes and complete the graphic organizer. Be sure to write the facts in note form.
Wednesday: Write rough draft using the graphic organizer
Thursday: Write final draft. Optional - include pictures/graphics to enhance your writing.
Friday: Turn it in.

The World Wide Web has many helpful search engines. Have you tried Yahooligans, Google, or Ask Jeeves? AltaVista or Yahoo are good for more in depth searches of topics.
If you are looking for pictures, a good place to start is Google Images.
A great online reference book is the Encyclopedia Britannica. Click here to search it.
If you are interested in current events, you might try CNN, MSNBC, or USA Today. For history topics go to the Smithsonian Institute, the Biography Channel, the History Channel, the Library of Congress, the White House, or the 50 States. There is even a link to learn about Portola Valley History.
If you are interested in nature and the environment, try these sites: The Weather Channel, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Geographic, country Maps and flags, the Map Machine Atlas, or an Atlas of the Moon, NASA, or NASA Image Exchange.
For fun, try Yahooligans Games, Nickelodeon, or KidsCom Games or Puzzles and Tangrams.
